Progress in residential care users keeping more of their money is welcomed by local Liberal Democrats

Jane Dodds and Kirsty Williams have welcomed an announcement that means residential care users can keep hold of more of their savings and investments.

From Monday 8th April the capital limit used in local authority charging for residential care has risen from £40,000 to £50,000. The capital limit determines when people pay the full cost of their residential care, and when they receive financial support towards the cost.

People in Wales will be able to keep up to £50,000 of their savings, investments or other capital without having to use this to pay for residential care. The figure in England and Northern Ireland is £23,250 while in Scotland it is £28,000.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats' most recent Welsh Assembly manifesto contained a commitment to “raise the capital allowances limit for social care.”

Jane Dodds, Parliamentary Candidate for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:

“As a social worker I know our social care sector is of paramount importance. Residential care is a vital part of that, particularly in Brecon and Radnorshire which of course has a significantly older population than Wales as whole.

“Raising the allowance is a welcome step that will help residential care users keep hold of more of their savings. On a personal level my own parents went through residential care and I know what a tough time it can be.

“I am deeply committed to working towards a social care sector that meets the needs of our population. I have demonstrated that in my professional life, and as an MP I would press every level of government to make it a reality.”

Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats' belief in the need to improve the social care sector was reflected in our manifesto commitment to raise the capital allowances limit for social care, and I’m pleased to see it being delivered. Letting people keep hold of more of their hard-savings as they access residential care is a positive development.”
