More rural banks to close

Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye have been hit by planned bank closures in the town. Lloyds have announced plans to close their branch in Crickhowell, while HSBC plan to close their branch in Hay-on-Wye.

Knighton Leisure Centre given 12 month reprieve

Knighton Leisure Centre looks set to be kept open for at least another 12 months. Powys County Council have consulted on closing it, but now say they have found funding for next year's budget.

It follows a strong public campaign, and a public meeting in early November in which the Council said: "The settlement from the Welsh Government was better than we thought so hopefully now we can come up with a positive proposal regarding Knighton Leisure Centre".

Through a funding floor, Kirsty Williams prioritised the funding of rural councils in negotiations with the Welsh Government.

Kirsty launches Healthy Home Service in Bronllys

Kirsty Williams AM launched the new Healthy Home Service in Bronllys, aimed at preventing falls, trips and slips in the home for older people across Powys. It also looks at other areas within the home with the aim of enabling older people to remain living safely and with independence. It aims to reduce hospital admissions and enable the safer discharge of patients.

Crickhowell Corn Exchange under new ownership

The Corn Exchange in Crickhowell is officially under new ownership. The former pub was purchased by Corn Exchange Crickhowell Ltd, preventing a national chain convenience store being built, and in doing so keeping Crickhowell's high street independent.

Funding floor protects rural Councils

Rural Councils have benefitted from the funding floor negotiated by Kirsty Williams in the Welsh Government budget.

 

The funding floor, designed to reduce variation in funding for councils, was part of the agreement which saw Kirsty Williams become Cabinet Secretary for Education. It ensured Powys County Council's planned 1.3% cut was limited to 0.5%.

Kirsty Williams visited Well pharmacy in Brecon this week to promote the work done by community pharmacies in Brecon & Radnorshire and across Wales.

As part of her visit Kirsty received her winter flu vaccination, and is encouraging people to get theirs.

The Welsh Government has approved Powys County Council's business case for the redevelopment of Brecon High School and to invest £6million in Gwerynfed High School.
