Council tax exemption for care leavers a positive step, says Kirsty

Kirsty Williams has welcomed an initiative that will see council tax scrapped for young people leaving the care system in Wales.

New legislation will mean all care leavers under 25 will be exempt from council tax. Some local authorities had already taken this step but many had not. The Wales-wide approach will be in force from April 2019.

As of March 2018 there were 210 looked after children in Powys.

Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:

“It’s crucial that children in care get the best possible opportunities in life. I’ve been pleased to be able to increase the Welsh Pupil Premium for children in care, providing schools with funding to overcome the barriers that this group of people sometimes face. Exemption from council tax is another positive step and one which I welcome.”
