MP and AM welcome Dyfed-Powys Police initiative12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 1st Oct 2008 Brecon and Radnorshire MP, Roger Williams and AM Kirsty Williams have today welcomed the initiative by Dyfed-Powys Police to help reduce the number of fatalities on the roads throughout the force area. Mr Williams said "The open road network and many scenic routes across Brecon and Radnorshire attract many motorcyclists from across the country. The majority of these motorcyclists are law abiding, sensible and considerate drivers, but sadly there are a small number who ignore safe riding practises, which in turn places themselves and other road users at risk. Each year Dyfed-Powys Police runs an operation which is aimed at reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries of motorcyclists on our roads. This is a vitally important campaign which I wholeheartedly support". Kirsty Williams AM said "I recently discussed the issue with the new Chief Constable, Ian Arundale. I support his belief that effective policing of the roads is critical in terms of demonstrating the force's commitment to protecting the public and ensuring our communities remain safe, whilst maintaining the support of the law-abiding citizens of the Dyfed-Powys Police Force area. The police are also gathering support from the four county councils across their force area and are joined by the Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership in tackling and improving road safety". ENDS - To date this approach has contributed to a 40% reduction of fatal motorcycle collisions compared to the same period last year.
