Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon & Radnorshire and Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Education, Enterprise and Transport said:

"After careful consideration and discussions with my family, colleagues and friends I have decided that I will be putting myself forward for leadership of the Welsh party and Assembly group.

"The Liberal Democrat's have had a great year of transformation with changes to key leadership posts across the Union. I feel it is now time for a fresh new face to head the Welsh party and to take us forward to big gains in the 2011 Assembly elections.

"Mike German will leave a strong legacy and has done much for our party over the years. But now is the time to look to the future, to 'raise the bar'; to reinvigorate the aspirations of our party's grassroots activists and of our nation as a whole.

"The party must move radically to reclaim issues of social prosperity and community empowerment, of which we are the true flame bearers, and we must re-establish this identity in the mind of the electorate. We must re-engage with voters who have lost interest in Welsh politics and show them that we truly are the party that will give Wales its brightest future and we are worth believing in.

"It is now clear that the Welsh Liberal Democrat's will be the first party in Wales to have a female leader, I am proud of this fact and I look forward to a contest which will give our membership the opportunity they deserve to select their future leader. A contest would be envigorating for the party."
