Community rallies to save Wyeside Arts

2.46.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 16th Jan 2008

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon & Radnorshire Kirsty Williams has added her voice to the campaign to save Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells, Powys which faces closure due to a lack of funding.

Kirsty said: "Wyeside is a much loved, affordable and unique facility; giving communities in rural Powys access to high quality arts and entertainment that is all too often the domain of our more urban cities.

"It is a service and social meeting point that must not be lost and I will be questioning the Minister on Wyeside's current funding difficulties and urgently seeking assistance from the Assembly Government.

"Only recently we have seen the Bay based Millennium Centre helped out of financial difficulty and arts provisions outside Cardiff should benefit equally from such assistance.

"People living in rural areas have as much right to engage in cultural and artistic centres and the Assembly should not discriminate against them by restricting their support to Urban South Wales."
