Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed the news that two churches in the constituency are to benefit from restoration grants.
St Mary's Church in Ystradfellte and Brecon Cathedral will both receive money from Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government's historic environment service, to help with essential repair work.
Ms Williams said: "I am delighted that these two important and historic sites will be able to receive some support, to ensure that they can be maintained for future generations. The preservation of our ecclesiastical heritage is a key component of our tourist industry, as well as the spiritual function these places of worship play in our communities."
Notes:
Grants are offered on the recommendation of the Historic Buildings Advisory Council for Wales. In this latest allocation of monies, 23 projects across Wales will benefit from £788,900 of funding.
A £30,000 grant has been awarded to Brecon Cathedral towards a second phase of external repair work to the Diocesan Centre and Clergy House.
The late 15th century west tower of St Mary's Church in Ystradfellte is in need of repair, and the church has been awarded £24,000 towards that scheme of work.
