Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has condemned today's Government statement announcing the closure of one in five post offices.
Trade Secretary Alistair Darling confirmed that around 2,500 post offices across the UK would close by 2009. Although there will be consultation on the plans, objections will not be allowed on the closures in principle, only the particular details for a region.
Ms Williams said: "Whilst the precise list of closures may not be published for another 18 months, I have no doubt that it will be rural areas such as our own which will be hardest hit. This is another prime example of a Government which refuses to listen - opposition to these closures is so widespread, and so vocal, but they are to be carried out regardless.
"I will continue to oppose these plans and to campaign against closures. Post Offices are at the heart of our communities and provide vital services to many of the more vulnerable and socially excluded in society - we simply cannot afford to lose any more."
