Powys CRB Check Problem

11.01.47am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 23rd Feb 2007

Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly member for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her concern after problems emerged with the way Powys County Council vet people working with children.

Up to 80 school workers may not have had a full Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check carried out.

Ms Williams said: "This is an extremely serious issue. I am seeking an urgent meeting with the Director of Education at Powys County Council to establish how this situation can be sorted out as quickly and safely as possible. CRB checks are done for a reason - no-one should be employed in a school without having had one. I cannot understand how this situation could have arisen - the Council has some very serious questions to answer."
