Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed the news that British Waterways has received a £50,000 grant for a project focused on the Brecon canal.

The money has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to celebrate the industrial and natural heritage of the canal, including work with schools and community groups.

Ms Williams said: "I'm delighted to hear that this grant has been awarded. The project sounds fascinating, and I look forward to getting involved in any way I can. Tourism plays a big role in the local economy, but there is relatively little that is focused on our industrial past, and this project may go some way to rectifying this, and broadening the range of interests that the area can cater for."

Notes:

The Monmouthshire and Brecon canal runs through 35 miles of countryside between Brecon and Cwmbran.

The Heritage Lottery Fund distributes a share of the money raised by the National Lottery for Good Causes to heritage projects across the UK.
