Local AM wants to set business free

10.39.43am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 2nd Feb 2007

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her concern that businesses in Wales are being hampered by over-regulation from Government.

The local AM is calling for more stringent consideration of business regulations, to cut down on unnecessary bureaucracy.

Ms Williams said: "I want to free Welsh businesses from their current burden of red tape, which can particularly hamper smaller companies. Wherever possible, new regulations should include sunset clauses, so that they would be subject to review and a vote in the Assembly three years after their introduction to ensure that they are absolutely necessary.

"This would give sufficient time for the impact of the regulation to be monitored and allow the Assembly Government to take up the case with the Westminster Government and Europe, before another vote is taken in the Assembly. If regulations are not working, they should be axed - simple as that."
