Local AM says "no" to nuclear power

10.06.05am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 23rd Jan 2007

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has voiced her opposition to any new nuclear power for Wales.

The local AM has stressed her concerns over the safety of nuclear power, and the need to embrace various means of renewable energy production.

Ms Williams said: "We must reject new nuclear power if we are serious about developing safe, clean and green energy. Wales has such huge potential for the production of renewable energy; committing to that could really be to our economic, as well as environmental, advantage.

"The risk of nuclear waste being dumped across Wales is a toxic treasure trove that Tony Blair seems determined to leave as a legacy for future generations, but Welsh communities must be protected from the dangers of nuclear waste. I want Wales to be given the powers to make planning decisions on large-scale energy developments, including nuclear power stations. By doing this we can reject nuclear power and the dangerous waste that it brings, and get on with the serious job of turning Wales into a green powerhouse."
