Local AM urges veterans to claim the recognition they deserve

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, is urging all eligible ex-servicemen and women to consider applying for a Veterans Badge.

The badge is available to those who served in HM Armed forces before and/ or during World War II, and to those who enlisted between 3rd September 1945 and 31st December 1969.

Ms Williams said: "Back in July I attended a Veteran's Day presentation in Brecon for ex-members of the Royal Air Force and was deeply moved by their humility and modesty. My grandfather fought in the war, and I believe it is vitally important for all of us today to remember the sacrifice of that generation.

"Many veterans are not even aware that they are eligible for this badge, but I would be more than happy to help any ex-servicemen and women who would like to apply for one."

Notes:

Applications for the badge, designed to be worn on the lapel of civilian attire by former service personnel, should be made to the Veteran's Agency (visit www.veteransagency.mod.uk, or call 0800 169 2277, for further information and to obtain an application form).

The badge is also available to those who served in the Cyprus Regiment, Home Guard or Polish Forces under UK Command, but not to those who served in the Armed Forces of other countries. It can also be issued posthumously to those in receipt of a War Widow/ Widowers pension paid by the Veterans Agency. It is hoped to eventually extend eligibility to all those who served in HM Armed Forces, but the Agency is currently unable to accept applications from people whose service began after 31 December 1969.
