Scientific development key to economic growth

2.04.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 19th Sep 2006

Welsh Liberal Democrat Enterprise and Innovation spokesperson Kirsty Williams AM today welcomed proposals for a new policy for science in Wales. Kirsty is a member of the Assembly committee which proposed the policy.

She said: "New scientific developments can be key to economic growth in Wales and this policy reflects that. Wales needs to raise its international profile to increase investment and bring in researchers. To do this, we need to make sure we aren't lagging behind with funding in comparison to the rest of the UK.

"The policy raises the importance of experts guiding science policy and industry having a say. It includes a recommendation to tailor science courses in schools to industry needs.

"The highly skilled jobs of the future are dependent on decent science education and investment in research today, which will lead to the breakthroughs of tomorrow.

"The proposal of a Chief Scientist for Wales and an industry led Science and Technology Council would help to guide these ideas and ensure funding is focused where it can be best used.

"I welcome the recommendations of the committee, because it builds on Wales' strengths in the field of science. We have a lot to be proud of, but we need to build on our achievements."
