Kirsty Williams AM continues fight for post offices
9.35.56am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 3rd May 2006
Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, continued her campaign today to support local post offices.
Ms Williams has subscribed to a Statement of Opinion, calling on the Department of Work and Pensions to reconsider its decision not to renew the contract for the Post Office Card Accounts beyond 2010.
Ms Williams said: "The Account Card is important for two reasons. Firstly, it allows those without a bank account to withdraw benefits and pensions in a manner convenient to them. Secondly, this service represents an important chunk of post offices business. At a time many post offices in the constituency, and across Wales, are already struggling, I fear that more closures will be inevitable if this contract is lost. Closures are a real worry - post offices are at the heart of many rural communities, and when they close there is often the added negative impact on other businesses nearby."
Notes:
Statements of Opinion are a mechanism for Assembly Members to draw attention to issues of concern by putting their views on a subject on record and then encouraging other Members to add their name to the Statement.
