Rail crime increases

4.29.27pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 29th Mar 2006

Welsh Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has expressed concern at the increasing levels of crime on the railways.

Figures out today show that the slight decrease in the total number of offences hides increases in a wide variety of types of offence.

Ms Williams said: "Today's figures show a worrying increase in a number of different crimes committed at stations and on trains. I want to see more and more people travelling by train; a real or perceived fear of crime is obviously a major barrier to this. Simple measures, such as the installation of CCTV, improved lighting and waiting facilities, and a visible staff presence can all help make a big difference.

"I would urge the Assembly Government to once again consider introducing its own Welsh version of the 'Secure Stations' scheme, with real incentives for the train operating companies to participate."
