Local AM welcomes road safety grant

4.30.13pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 15th Mar 2006

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed the £294,000 road safety grant awarded to Powys for 2006-07.

Ms Williams said: "Concerns over road safety is one of the most frequent topics raised by constituents in the correspondence that I receive, and I am in virtually continual correspondence with Ministers on behalf of various communities in the area. I will be interested to see how Powys County Council plans to spend the money, and hope that it can contribute to a reduction in road casualties in the area."

Notes:

At the Assembly yesterday, Members approved the Local Government Finance (Wales) Special Grant Report No. 3 2005: Local Road Safety. The budget of £7.412 million is distributed to local authorities based on a formula which takes into account the population share within the authority and the number of accident casualties on the area's roads. The money can be used for a variety of projects, but a minimum of 20% must be spent on education.

824 individuals were killed or injured on roads in Powys in 2004 ( From 2004: Road Casualties Wales).
