Final countdown for rural broadband3.24.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 14th Mar 2006 Welsh Liberal Democrat economic development spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed today's announcement that rural Wales is to get the broadband infrastructure already available in Welsh towns and cities. The Welsh Assembly Government has announced that the BT Group will begin work immediately on upgrading the last few exchanges; the project should be completed by the summer. Ms Williams, Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: "I am delighted that this contract has been awarded; rural Wales has waited too log for this vital business tool. Work can now begin to ensure that those in my constituency, and other rural areas in Wales, who have previously been unable to access broadband technology will be able to do so in the near future. "Broadband technology is one factor that can attract companies and individuals to locate in Mid Wales, and ensure real economic development in rural areas. I am pleased that this contract has been awarded, and hope that the Government will build on this and look at other factors, such as transport and affordable housing, which enable people to move to rural Wales, as well as improving services for those already resident there."
