Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, has welcomed the announcement by the Welsh Government that it will invest £1.5m over the next three years for Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) to deliver an enhanced export development programme to support the red meat industry in Wales.

The funding is a response to the challenges the industry faces due to the uncertainty of future trading arrangements with Europe post-Brexit. The money will be used to maintain existing export markets and the development of new ones.

The announcement has been welcomed by farming unions and the farming industry.

This week a report, by the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), said the a Brexit on WTO rules would cut average farm profits by more than half.

Commenting, Kirsty Williams said:

“This investment is very welcome news. With reports this week that farm incomes could be cut in half as a result of a ‘no deal Brexit’ it is vitally important we do all we can to support our farming industry here in Wales.

“Welsh red meat is the best in the world and I will continue to work with Welsh Government, farming unions and farmers to ensure that this vital industry is protected and supported.”
